Black-crowned Night Heron

Black-crowned Night Herons are rare visitors to the rookery. When seen, they are usually well-hidden in the bushes on the path on the east side of the pond, or perched in tall pine trees.

- Back: Black.
- Body: Mostly gray to white.
Legs: Yellow.
Feet: Yellow.
Bill: Black.

Black-crowned Night Herons are typically around 2 feet tall, and typically have wingspans approaching 4 feet.

As their name implies, Black-crowned Night Herons feed at night. They typically perch throughout the day.

Black-crowned Night Herons are one of several species of herons that utilize bait. They drop twigs, feathers, and other small objects into the water to attract fish.

They eat small fish, shrimp and other crustaceans, and small amphibians and reptiles.
